Our Organization
Ability Beyond Disability, formerly Datahr Rehabilitation Institute, a 501(c) (3), not for profit organization, was founded in 1953 by a group of parents who wanted a better life for their children with disabilities. Throughout its long history as a provider of innovative services for people who are among the most disenfranchised and disadvantaged in our society, Ability Beyond Disability has spearheaded new initiatives and pilot programs in Connecticut and New York. Many have served as models throughout the country. Ability Beyond Disability has received the highest level of accreditation from the Commission on Accreditation for Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) and is recognized as the first agency in the country to close its sheltered workshop and provide extensive services that are fully community-based. It currently employs 800 staff, engages over 500 volunteers and has an annual operating budget of $51 million. It is governed by a voluntary Board of Directors and Board of Trustees and receives community support in excess of $1 million annually.
Our Mission
To enable individuals whose independent living skills are impaired by disability, illness or injury, to achieve and maintain self-reliance, fulfillment and comfort at home, at work and in the community, by providing the best comprehensive home, health and rehabilitation services.
